Pallet Buying Guide
Choosing the Right Grade
Grade A pallets suit uses where appearance matters, such as retail displays and one-way shipments. They are new or like-new, with no repairs and a clean surface.
Grade B pallets are a common choice for warehousing and general shipping. They may show minor repairs or staining, and those cosmetic marks are often acceptable for everyday use.
Grade C pallets can work for single-use applications, internal warehouse transfers or non-critical storage. They are heavily used, so check that they suit your load before ordering.
Size Selection Strategy
48x40" GMA pallets are a widely used standard size and fit most warehouse racking. Unless you have a specific reason to choose another size, this is a sensible starting point.
48x48" pallets are commonly used for drums. Consider this size if you handle bulk liquids or granular materials in drums.
Custom sizes make sense when products don't fit standard pallets efficiently. However, they may not work in standard racking and can be harder to resell, so weigh that before committing to custom dimensions. Custom pallets are available where partner suppliers offer them.
Volume Planning
Pallet turnover is a useful way to plan. Compare how many pallets you use in a period with how many you keep on hand. Too many ties up space and capital, and too few risks operational delays.
Buffer stock protects against supply disruptions and demand spikes. Base it on how many pallets you use each day and how long a new order takes to arrive, which you can confirm with the supplier.
Order size can affect a quote, so include your expected quantity in your request. Weigh larger orders against storage space, handling labour, cash flow and potential damage from extended storage.
Checking Pallet Condition
Visual inspection: Look for straight stringers without cracks or splits, firmly attached deck boards with no missing fasteners, and uniform dimensions. Warped pallets don't stack reliably and can jam automated handling equipment. Reject any pallets with protruding nails that could damage products or injure workers.
Load capacity: Capacity varies with design, wood, condition and how the pallet is supported. Confirm it with the supplier for your application.
Heat-treatment marks: If you need heat-treated pallets, check that the HT stamp is clearly visible and undamaged. ISPM 15 heat treatment requires a core temperature of 56 °C for 30 minutes.
Complete Pallet Buying Guide
Understanding Pallet Construction
Stringer pallets use parallel boards (stringers) running the length of the pallet, supporting deck boards on top and usually on the bottom. Standard two-way stringer pallets allow forklift entry from two sides, and notched stringers add partial four-way access.
Block pallets use blocks in place of stringers, allowing true four-way forklift entry. Four-way access can improve warehouse flow, which makes block pallets a common choice for repeated handling.
Deck board configuration affects performance. Closer board spacing better supports smaller packages, while wider gaps reduce weight and material. Variations may not suit automated handling systems, so check your equipment requirements.
Material Considerations
Hardwood pallets (oak, maple, ash) are dense and strong, and suit heavier use. The trade-off is more weight than softwood alternatives.
Softwood pallets (pine, spruce, fir) are lighter and suit many general applications. Kiln drying reduces moisture, which helps limit warping and mold compared with green (undried) lumber.
Plastic pallets offer a non-porous surface that is easy to clean and a consistent weight. They generally cost more up front than wood, so compare them against how you will use them. Availability depends on partner suppliers.
Calculating Total Cost of Ownership
Purchase price is only part of what pallets cost you. Factor in handling labour, storage space, damage and loss, and disposal or recycling. A higher grade can cost less overall if it reduces replacement and repair, so compare grades against your actual use.
Damage and loss vary with pallet condition and handling practices. If you are replacing pallets often, look at the causes, which may include operator training or incompatible equipment.
Opportunity costs from pallet shortages include production downtime, delayed shipments and rush charges. For some operations, a modest buffer stock is worth the storage space.
Requirements to Check First
Your customer's specifications: Some receivers set their own rules for pallet size, condition or material. Check your buyer's requirements before ordering, as non-compliant pallets may be rejected.
Your equipment: Confirm entry type (two-way or four-way), dimensions and deck board layout against your racking, forklifts and any automated handling systems.
Heat treatment: ISPM 15 is the international standard for wood packaging. Heat-treated pallets are marked with an HT stamp, and treatment requires a core temperature of 56 °C for 30 minutes. Check current requirements for your destination, and confirm the stamp with the supplier.
Ordering Tips
Lead times and scheduling: Timing depends on the partner supplier, the size you need and the quantity. Custom pallets generally take longer than standard sizes, so raise your dates when the supplier follows up.
Pickup and delivery: Pickup or delivery is arranged by the supplier where available. Include your location and quantity in your request, and consider combining orders where that suits your schedule.
Returns: Clarify terms with the supplier before purchasing. Wood pallets naturally vary in appearance, so agree on written specifications and clear acceptance criteria up front to prevent disputes.
